Does anyone know of a cheap brackish fish to start my tank with?
I want to start a brackish pufferfish tank. I also want to test it out with a cheap brackish fish first before I put in the puffers in case the tank isn’t ready. Any ideas?
Once you cycle the tank, there’s nothing I’d recommend more than using a “test fish” to test the waters (you decide whether the pun was intended or not), and in this case, I’d strongly recommend something like feeder Guppies, or any of the cheaper varieties of Mollies now available. While these fish are sold as freshwater, Guppies are extremely tolerant of GRADUAL changes in salinity, and can easily be acclimated to full marine conditions, and Mollies are actually best kept in water with a higher dissolved mineral content, like brackish water. If you go with either of those fish, put them in a 5 gallon bucket of FRESHWATER (only 1 or 2 gallons of freshwater), and begin a siphon from the brackish tank into the freshwater bucket. Tie a knot in the hose so that only a few drops of water are getting to the bucket every few seconds, and leave it like this until it’s nearly full (you’ll need to check up on it every few minutes), which could take hours (I’d start it in the morning). Once it’s nearly full, remove about half the bucket’s contents so it’s now half full (or half empty depending on your outlook). Let the brackish water continue to drip into the bucket again, and when it’s nearly full, repeat the half draining process. The entire process should take no less than 5-6 hours, and will give you brackish acclimated Guppies or Mollies, perfect for making sure the cycle is complete and the tank is fish-safe.
